In Okinawa, there is a similar thing to China's Foo Dogs.
They are called Shi-sa, and they are not lions with a dog's name, they are kind of half lion half dog.
The one with the open mouth scares away bad spirits, where as the one with the closed mouth keeps the good spirits in. There are a few different beliefs about this, but that's the most prevalent from what I've found.
