2012 Otakon Wrap Up

Journal Entry: Tue Jul 31, 2012, 8:15 PM

I had a great time at the 2012 Otakon Convention this year and as always, it was a pleasure to meet and speak with many of you who visited me at either the workshop I ran and/or at my table.  Thank you for all of your support!

Many people who attended the workshop were not able to receive a copy of the CD I made so I wanted to make those files available to download.  Feel free to download the lineart PSD files I used during my demo: [link]

Thank you to everyone who attended the workshop.  I was a bit shocked to see just how much interest there was in digital painting and it was an honor to speak on the topic at Otakon.  It was great to touch base with lots of artists afterwards and I hope that I can do this same demo at future conventions!

If you missed out on the workshop, it was recorded and is available on Vimeo:  [link]

Thanks again to everyone who came out to attend the workshop and bought prints at my table!

Thanks for posting the link! I took my son to the panel since he was really interested in digital work. He was a little upset about the CD, but I took about two pages of notes for the line-work and painting demonstrations. I was the guy in the back who asked about traditional lines for a digital painting, since most of my work is traditional brush inking (like in comic books) and use that as a base for my digital pictures. (I could never get used to inking in Photoshop...) Your methods were similar to mine, but the custom brushes were really interesting. I've always used stock Photoshop brushes for my pictures... Now I see what I have been lacking!

Thanks for an awesome panel. I wish I had the chance to stop in the art room, but each time I was there your booth was closed. =(

Would definitely love to see an "intermediate to expert" course sometime in the future.

Also, what was the name of the printer in Baltimore? My local print-shop closed recently (I was their only business, really), so I went with Staples last minute for the con. The prints, not surprisingly, came out really, really bad. Definitely looking to switch.

Thank you very much for coming to the workshop! I apologize about the CDs - I didn't think there would be that many people! Great question by the way. I wish I had more time to address it but was worried about how much time I had left. I had meant to mention an additional program that is great for inking lines called Easy Paint Tool SAI. It's a fantastic Japanese created program that doesn't cost much but has some powerful pen smoothing features. It may be right up your alley.

Also, check out Algenpfleger's custom Photoshop brushes here on deviantART. Here's the link: [link]

I started out on a build of those brushes and began creating my own. There are some fantastic brushes in that set.

Sorry about my booth! We had a crazy schedule going and I feel like I didn't get to spend enough time in the Alley this year.

The printer I use in Baltimore is Whitmore. Ask for Mike Neff and he will take good care of you. Their website is: [link]

Thanks again for coming to the workshop and your support!

Thanks for answering all my questions. =) I'll definitely check out the printer. Not all of my pictures in the auction sold this year (I blame those Staples "Canvas Prints"...), but I have a lot of people e-mailing me for prints.
